1. From Screen to Wall workshop
During Unit 1, my standout favourite was the sign-up workshop that took place at the beginning of the course, featuring Josef Konczak's session titled "From Screen to Wall." In this engaging workshop held in the photography studio, Josef Konczak provided a comprehensive exploration of digital post-production methods and digital printing, not only for me but for my fellow classmates as well.
As a student transitioning from the animation major, most of my previous works were confined to the digital realm. However, through Josef Konczak's insightful presentation and explanations in this workshop, I was introduced for the first time to a diverse array of printing materials—transparent, matte, glossy, thin, thick, and more. The hands-on experience of touching and observing these materials was crucial in understanding the nuances of ink expression on different surfaces. This experience felt truly magical, offering a tactile connection to the materials that goes beyond what can be achieved digitally.
Moreover, this workshop laid a strong foundation for me as I ventured into exhibiting and printing my photographic works during the work in progress show. The newfound understanding of different printing textures has not only expanded my creative horizons but has also enriched my artistic practice. Josef Konczak's workshop was a pivotal moment in my academic journey, bridging the gap between the digital and tangible aspects of my creative process.
2. Tutorial with Francis Summers and Josef Konczak
The two most impactful tutorials for me and my creative work came from my tutor, Professor Francis Summers, and Josef Konczak. In the initial stages, Professor Francis Summers recommended numerous books, resources, and artistic works related to verbal bullying, guiding me on how to conduct research. This guidance significantly influenced the overall direction and focus of my creative process.
In the subsequent stages, during tutorials with Josef Konczak, I received valuable advice on exhibition planning and project implementation. For instance, considering the sketches of my early works, he offered suggestions regarding venue and material choices. This input provided me with a deeper understanding and contemplation of project planning, time management, and feasibility. It enabled me to think more critically about how to bring the project to fruition.
Both tutorials played pivotal roles in shaping my project, one by offering a strong conceptual foundation through literature and art recommendations and the other by providing practical insights into the logistical aspects of exhibition planning and project execution. This combined guidance has enhanced my ability to navigate and successfully advance my project.
3. Work in progress show and Critic
Towards the end of Unit 1, we had the Work in Progress show and group critique for our MA Fine Art Photography program. On the exhibition day, December 5th, Professor Francis Summers provided valuable insights into the presentation of my artwork, offering significant assistance. He guided me and fellow students in planning the exhibition space, using tools like a spirit level and tape measure, painting walls, and performing various technical tasks related to exhibition setup. Through these previously unexplored techniques, my artwork was ultimately displayed in a neat and compelling manner on the walls of the From A to B Gallery.
As classmates explained their works, I witnessed a diverse range of outstanding pieces, reflecting everyone's imaginative and creative prowess. Under the guidance of Professor Francis Summers, students expressed their thoughts freely, providing me with perspectives, interpretations, and suggestions for my artwork. This interaction expanded my understanding of my work, offering a multi-faceted and broader insight.
